The City Hall of Antwerp was in urgent need of restoration. In recent years, many partners have worked hard to combat the decline. The Renaissance building no longer met the applicable comfort requirements. As a flooring specialist, Van Looveren Parket from Wuustwezel (Belgium) was able to focus on the complexity of the parquet in the beautiful building. The floors were supplied by Kerkhofs Parket.

A project of a total of 3,000 m² of floors in the building in Antwerp. That challenge was tackled by Van Looveren Parket in 2018. For three years the company painstakingly worked on these beautiful floors. Now they look back at the results with a huge sense of pride
Restauration and new
The project consisted of both restoration of existing floors and the installation of new floors to complement the esthetics. The beautiful parquet floors in the Wandelzaal and in the Grote Leyszaal have been completely restored. All other floors are new, but identical to the naked eye “The floors we installed there are all based on the original patterns. Everything has been copied exactly,” says Liesbet Van Looveren, owner of Van Looveren Parket. “They are therefore no longer available as standard in this way.”
High quality
The parquet floors were really high quality. Logical, for such a building, then you only go for the very best. All the wood is even quarter-sawn. High-quality products have also been chosen for installation and processing. For bonding, a solvent-free and very low-emission WAKOL parquet adhesive was used. The joints and nail holes of the tapestry floors are filled with LOBA EasyFill. The surface was finished with a fast drying oil in just one application. This resulted in significant time savings.
All floors are finished with the high-quality high solid impregnation oil LOBA 2K ImpactOil Transparent. The natural character of the wood is best emphasized and – due to the high load in this public building – it is an extremely suitable as a finish. In addition, the combination of WAKOL and LOBA (Connected Systems) products ensures maximum safety and completely coordinated products. Guaranteed success. This project was also characterized by its need for attention to detail. For example, every nook and cranny was measured separately and discussed with the architect. Therefore, the symmetry in each room comes into its own in a different way, but correct to the millimeter. Liesbet: “It was an exceptional project, which we really enjoyed working on! We are also very pleased with the fantastic end result.”

The City Hall of Antwerp
This stately Renaissance building is more than 450 years old. It is one of the oldest buildings in the city. After the thorough restoration in 2018-2022, the town hall is now a contemporary, sustainable and open house of governance. The restoration went a step further than just repair. After the restoration, the town hall has become an open house, an icon of valuable heritage on the Grote Markt, a house where a political policy is shaped in a truly sustainable surrounding.
